Bullo River Station
Within the Australian context the words 'cattle station' conjure a very special image. It involves hot thirsty plains, teeming wildlife, strong bronzed rivers, a vast sky and dusty stock camps, where horses and stock skills are very much alive - and Bullo River Station fits like a glove. This is a Top End cattle station (ranch) from the classic mould. Half a million acres of grassy plains with 8,000 Brahman-cross cattle and many more wallabies, brown rivers were crocodiles lurk on the muddy banks, rugged hills inscribed with Aboriginal rock art, gushing streams and crystal clear swimming holes, termite mounds, boab trees, stock horses, wild buffalo, and a few great yarns to tell. Situated in the top north-western corner of the Northern Territory in what is referred to as the East Kimberley, there is no place better to experience a quintessential Australian Outback Station.
Lined with beautiful, smooth-bark boab trees, the long, low stone homestead with its facade of five arches is cool and quiet even in the heat of the day. Guests are welcome to wander in, chat with the Bullo team, help themselves to a cold drink or just chill out in the living area - it's a casual affair.
Guest accommodation, located only a few metres from the main homestead is a purpose built area consisting of 12 double/twin rooms off one central corridor, each with airconditioning and ensuite. The decor is simple - cool, tiled floors, indigenous art on the walls and no phones or televisions. All rooms are serviced daily and have sliding door access to the lawns surrounding the homestead.
Food has always played an important role in station life and Bullo River Station honours the tradition while bringing a modern touch to the table. Breakfasts are usually served outside on the homestead verandah, while lunch is often a picnic, enjoyed by peaceful billabongs or under the shade of a magnificent boab tree - the kitchen churns out fresh cakes and biscuits to fill picnic baskets for guests out and about on the property. Dinners are informal and the menu relies heavily on the two exceptional products of the property, namely fresh barramundi (hopefully one you have caught yourself) and organic prime beef from the surrounding pastures.
